Quinn Reveals Keys to Limiting QB Newton
Coach Dan Quinn was one busy man on Thursday while doing media at Super Bowl 50.
Quinn is the one coach best suited answer the million-dollar question: How do you stop Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers?
The Falcons defeated the Panthers in Week 16, Carolina's only loss of the season. And, as Seattle's defensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014, Quinn's Seahawks also defeated the Panthers.
Limiting the production of Newton is a hard task, but Quinn believes it's the ultimate key to success against the mobile quarterback.
Newton's production decreases significantly when he's pressured, according to statistics provided by Pro Football Focus' Neil Hornsby to MMQB's Jenny Vrentas:
"He ranks third in the league in passer rating on dropbacks where he has a clean pocket. When he's pressured, he slides to the 19th-ranked passer, with his passer rating dropping more than 40 points."
Quinn confirms those statistics by explaining it all comes down to getting hits on Newton and playing physical.
"To me, defensively, hitting him is way more important than disguising him. He knows what the coverage is, it's just a matter of, can the route take the time to develop," Quinn said to Vrentas
