ATLANTA — In a Week 18 game that was more back and forth than expected, the Atlanta Falcons lost to the Carolina Panthers inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the 2024 regular-season finale.
Final score: 44-38
Why it's important: Elsewhere in the NFC South, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New Orleans Saints and therefore kept the Falcons out of the playoffs. However, a loss to the Panthers ended the Falcons' 2024 regular season on a down note. Atlanta finished with an 8-9 record, while Tampa Bay captured the division title and postseason bid with a 10-7 record.
Key takeaway: The Falcons' defense allowed way too much to get by, especially from Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, who the unit didn't face when Atlanta previously beat Carolina in Week 6. Andy Dalton was the Panthers' quarterback at that point.
- More: Young completed 25 of his 34 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring passes were from 9, 12 and 33 yards out. They didn't appear all that contested. Young also scored twice on 2- and 10-yard touchdown runs. He had clear paths to the end zone both times.
Key moment: The Panthers turned an interception into a touchdown in the third quarter to tie the game up and carry that momentum through the end of regulation.
- More: The Falcons' offense faced a first-and-10 at their own 27-yard line when quarterback Michael Penix Jr. threw a fastball to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III with pressure in his face. The ball bounced out of McCloud's hands and into those of Panthers cornerback Mike Jackson.
- The Panthers' offense then took over at the Falcons' 21-yard line. Four plays later, on a fourth-and-1, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tommy Tremble. That made the score 24-all, keeping Carolina in the game and stealing momentum away from Atlanta.
Standout performance: Drake London. The Falcons wide receiver had the first multi-touchdown game of his three-year career Sunday. He scored on a 20-yard reception in the second quarter and a 21-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Overall, London finished with 10 receptions for a career-high 187 yards and the two scores.
Player milestones:
- Drake London had six receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown in the first half, marking the first time the third-year wide receiver has ever had 100 yards receiving in a single half.
- With his 17-yard run at the 9:24 mark in the third quarter, running back Tyler Allgeier passed running back Tevin Coleman and moved into 10th place in career rushing yards for the Falcons. Allgeier is just in his third season.
- Bijan Robinson's 9-yard run at the 8:21 mark in the second quarter put him at 51 yards from scrimmage in the game. It was the 32nd career game with at least 50 yards from scrimmage for the second-year running back, which ties him with running backs Edgerrin James and LaDainian Tomlinson for most by a player through his first two seasons in NFL history.
Injury updates:
- Cornerback Mike Hughes exited the game in the first quarter to be evaluated for a concussion but was cleared to return shortly thereafter. In the second quarter, though, Hughes exited again, this time with a shoulder injury, and was ruled out.
- Defensive lineman Demone Harris exited the game in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion but was cleared to return shortly thereafter.
A tweet-length review: The Falcons editorial staff of Tori McElhaney, Will McFadden, Terrin Waack and Amna Subhan share their gut reactions to Sunday's outcome in 280 characters or less.
- McElhaney: The reality of this team did not match the perception of it (I'll explain in my column later).
- McFadden: The Falcons said they were focused on controlling the controllables, but this game got out of control when it mattered most.
- Waack: Can't help but think about how many times the Falcons were in control of the NFC South.
- Subhan: Even though the season ended the way it did, Michael Penix Jr. matured in real time — it was exciting to watch.
Settling the storylines:
- No 1,000-yard double trouble: Drake London surpassed 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career in Week 17. Fellow wide receiver Darnell Mooney, however, needed 8 yards on Sunday to hit that milestone. Unfortunately for Mooney, he was inactive and unable to even attempt accomplishing that feat. London and Mooney could have become the first pair of Falcons receivers to notch 1,000 yards since Julio Jones and Roddy White did so in 2012.
- How it went: Without Mooney on the field, the Penix-to-London connection was on full display. Penix targeted his top receiver 18 times, and London came away with 10 grabs for a career-best 187 yards and two touchdowns. Now that's working nine to five.
- Player of the Game?: The prediction was Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell, who has had a very under-the-radar season. So, the thought was Sunday could have provided Terrell opportunities to shine one final time against a struggling Panthers offense. That is, if Carolina threw the ball his way.
- Unrelated to Sunday but important: It was announced Thursday that Falcons special teamer KhaDarel Hodge and right guard Chris Lindstrom were named to the 2025 Pro Bowl Games. It marked Hodges' first time receiving the honor and Lindstrom's third in a row.
