Kyle Pitts has first multi-score game in Falcons' win

The last time Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts scored more than one touchdown in a single game was college.

TAMPA, Fla. — Happy National Tight Ends Day, Kyle Pitts.

The Atlanta Falcons tight end had himself a career game in his team’s 31-26 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

Pitts' four receptions and 91 yards were his best marks of the season, but they fell short of his career peaks. Those numbers, good as they were, did not prompt the smile on his face in the locker room after the game, however.

It was the two touchdowns that had him grinning — and for good reason. His last multi-score game was in 2020, when he was in the midst of a sensational season at the University of Florida.

"That was pretty different," Pitts said. "I haven't had one of those since college, so that was pretty cool. And it was National Tight Ends Day, so that was awesome."

Pitts scored on a 36-yard reception in the first quarter and a 49-yard catch in the second quarter.

The first touchdown came on a fourth-and-third play from the Tampa Bay 36-yard line. The pocket started to close in around Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins when he threw the ball up deep. Pitts secured it around the 15-yard line and outran Buccaneers safety Kaevon Merriweather the remaining distance to the end zone.

"I just put some air on it and said go run underneath it," Cousins said. "What (Pitts) does so well, once he catches it, is his ability to pull away, which he then did again on his second touchdown as well."

The second touchdown was almost nonexistent.

This time, the Falcons faced a second-and-10 from the Buccaneers' 49-yard line. Cousins threw a dart up the middle to Pitts, who basically caught it inside a triangle of Buccaneers defenders near the 35-yard line. Pitts then cleared the chaos and headed to the end zone.

Pitts let off the gas as he neared the goal line, though, and Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. caught up enough to knock the ball loose. Officials reviewed the play, debating whether the ball broke the plane before it was jarred free.

"It felt like almost 20 minutes," Pitts said. "I was like, 'Oh, Lord, this is not looking good.' But tight end gods saved it. And we got that touchdown."

They did indeed.

"Definitely dodged a bullet, for sure," Pitts said. "We won't ever let that happen again."

In addition to those long catches, Pitts had completions of 2 and 4 yards. He only missed one of his targets.

Pitts now has 419 yards receiving on the season, giving him an average of 52.4 yards per game and three touchdowns. Sunday marked the fourth straight game in which he caught at least three passes and gained 65 yards.

"Kyle is just becoming a better player and better person every single day," Falcons safety Jessie Bates III said. "… This year, when you have a leader like Kirk Cousins who can push Kyle Pitts and continue to put the belief in him, I think the sky's the limit for Kyle."

Pitts set the bar pretty high for himself as a rookie in 2021, totaling 1,026 yards receiving, the second most by a rookie in NFL history. Unfortunately, MCL and PCL injuries ended a potential repeat performance in 2022. And Pitts never really seemed 100% during his return in 2023.

Sunday showed the clearest signs yet that the former first-round draft pick is once again a big-play threat for the Falcons.

"Having that sore knee, last year was a long year," Pitts said. "Now, just a new team and a new year back to myself, it's pretty cool to see what we're doing."
