Despite the dramatics of Atlanta's second-round come-back playoff win over the Seahawks this past season, some may have forgotten how frequent those types of comebacks were. Atlanta QB Matt Ryan led the Falcons back from a 28-27 deficit in the NFC Divisional playoff game to set up a score in the final seconds of the game. Ryan drove the Falcons 41 yards up the field on two plays and put Atlanta in position for a Matt Bryant game-winning field goal, another frequent occurence in 2012.
Of course, the comeback against Seattle wasn't the only one in 2012. It was just the latest in a long line of comebacks Ryan has engineered as the Falcons' signal caller. Ryan's 22 comebacks in the fourth quarter or overtime is the most by a QB in his first five seasons since 1966, but there's an equally impressive stat about Ryan's comebacks that isn't quite as well known.
Those 22 game-winners under Ryan's leadership are the most in the NFL since 2008, Ryan's rookie season.
In 2012, Ryan engineered six game-winning drives, including back-to-back wins twice, over Washington and Oakland and again against Arizona and Tampa Bay. Four of those wins came inside the Georgia Dome, three came from field goals by Bryant and three came from TD runs by running back Michael Turner. Ryan also led six game-winning drives in 2010.
