Pursuant to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) and the Atlanta Falcons Stadium Company (StadCo), StadCo today notified the GWCCA that it has amended its prior notification of July 30, 2013, to reflect that the South Site is feasible for construction of the new Atlanta stadium. This move follows agreements reached to acquire the two church properties necessary for construction of the new stadium on that site.
"This final decision regarding the location for the new stadium is the result of the efforts of many leaders within the City of Atlanta, State of Georgia, Georgia World Congress Center Authority, and the two churches on the South Site property," said Atlanta Falcons Owner and Chairman Arthur Blank. "As the preferred site, the South Site serves the best interests of many important partners, including the surrounding communities. We are grateful for the ongoing support of everyone involved in this project, and we look forward to sharing further details regarding the new stadium design in the coming weeks."
StadCo and the GWCCA will now move forward in finalizing the documents necessary for an initial closing, as required by the MOU. In addition, StadCo will present its schematic stadium design to the GWCCA Board for approval in late October. A final design will be completed by April 2014, when construction of the new stadium will begin. The new stadium will open in spring 2017.
