Transcript: Tony Gonzalez Locker Room Interview

On whether it's special to be headed out West:

"Yeah. As far as the game goes, I won't get more up for this game, but I have my whole family out there and all my friends that I grew up with. Back when I was with Kansas City, this used to be a 50 or 60 ticket game. I kind of limited it this year. I told them I was only getting 20 of them, so the rest of them are going to have to fend for themselves. I think I'm going to have about 45 people there at the game."

On the San Diego defense:

"They look good. Their front seven looks really good. It's going to be a tough challenge for us. We're going to have to protect [QB] Matt [Ryan] to get the ball down the field, but with guys like LB Takeo Spikes, LB Shaun Phillips, and LB Jarrett Johnson it's going to be tough for us to go out there and move the ball down the field. Hopefully, we can get that done."

On the meaning of being 2-0:

"It's just a good start. As far as I'm concerned, I think that's the mindset of this team. We have a long season. I've been on teams that we started out great and you don't even make the playoffs. There is no way we can allow ourselves to even think we've arrived or anything like that. It's just a good start. It's what we wanted to do. It's what our goal was, and we just have to keep building on it. We've got to keep improving. There is no doubt about it. Offensively, that's something I can speak too, we have got to put touchdowns on the board. There is a lot of room for improvement and we will improve."

On how the Chargers secondary looks:

"It looks good. I went against [S Eric] Weddle when he was a young pup coming into the League, and he was good back then, so now with all these years in the League he's improved a lot. CB Quintin Jammer is someone I saw a lot when I was out there in Kansas City, so they're good. They're a really good defense. It's going to be a tough challenge for us, but I think we're up for it."

On Coach Norv Tuner's team not starting slow this year:

"Norv always starts slow, but they've started fast this year. They have a lot of talent on that football team. He's such a good coach all around, but offensively the schemes he comes up with it's going to be tough for our defense. This is a really good football team. This is a good test for us to see where we're at as a team, and it's the most important game on our schedule because it's the next game. It's something that we have to be ready for and I think we will be."

On TE Antonio Gates:

"I've had a chance to watch him since he came into the League. He's a great route runner. Deceptively quick and fast, he's just very savvy in his route running and he has great hands. He'll lull you to sleep sometimes or he'll come off with speed. You've got to be ready for him. He's a go to guy. You see defenses go against him and they put two guys on him like he's a gunner on a punt because that's how good he is. That's what he demands. If you give him one-on-one coverage or you think you don't account for him he's going to kill you. He's definitely one of the best tight ends in the League."

On bonding with him because he played basketball too:

"He was a damn good basketball player. He was kind of like the next guy after me, first basketball player to set the tone for what the NFL is going through now with all these tight ends coming off the basketball court."
