What happened in Falcons home overtime win against Buccaneers

The Falcons move to 3-2 on the season after their Week 5 win against the Buccaneers.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons emerged victorious from their fifth consecutive one-score game on Thursday, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 36-30, in overtime at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in their third prime-time game of the season.

Every game recap this 2024 season will be broken down by quarter for right-at-the-buzzer consumption. To get things going, Atlanta won the coin toss (3-2 in that regard) and elected to receive the opening kickoff from Tampa Bay. The Falcons also won the overtime coin toss, helping set up the dramatic finish.

WIN Game Breakdown 16x9

FIRST QUARTER

The Falcons must have been really confident in their offensive plan because they elected to take the ball first rather than defer to the second half.

That confidence was well placed.

On the opening drive, Atlanta efficiently moved down the field and scored a touchdown, their second first-possession touchdown of the season. The drive lasted seven plays and covered 70 yards. Bijan Robinson ran the ball three times for 5 yards, while Kirk Cousins completed three of his four passes for 65 yards, including a 32-yard strike to Kyle Pitts. It was ultimately wide receiver Drake London who caught the 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kirk Cousins to put the Falcons on the board first.

The Buccaneers matched the Falcons' fast start with a touchdown of their own. Quarterback Baker Mayfield capped off a nine-play, 63-yard drive with a 2-yard pass to wide receiver Mike Evans, who was wide open in the end zone.

What's interesting about the Falcons' first defensive drive is they opened with Kaden Elliss as the only inside linebacker. His normal starting partners, Troy Andersen and Nate Landman, are sidelined with injuries. Andersen has a knee injury and was ruled out during the week. Landman is on injured reserve due to quad and calf injuries. Rookie JD Bertrand filled in for Andersen last week after he went down late in the game, but the Falcons chose not to start him.

Also, Mayfield's sole incomplete pass in his first drive was nearly picked off by Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell. Atlanta's No. 1 corner had the ball in his hands but dropped it.

The Falcons' offense missed an opportunity to add to its score on the following drive, reaching the Buccaneers' 19-yard line before Cousins was sacked for a loss of 9 yards by Vita Vea on third-and-5. Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo came out to attempt a 46-yard field goal. He missed — his first of the season — but a defensive flag gave Koo another shot, along with an extra 5 yards. He missed the 41-yard attempt, too, leaving the score tied and the ball in the Buccaneers' possession.

Tampa Bay wound up in a very similar situation. The Buccaneers' drive came to a halt at the Falcons' 35-yard line after an incomplete pass on third-and-3. Buccaneers kicker Chase McLaughlin entered the game and successfully made a 53-yard field goal, giving his team a minor lead with a minute and change left in the first quarter.

Nothing changed in that little time.

SCORING PLAYS

Falcons: Kirk Cousins 18-yard pass to Drake London; PAT good … 7-0, ATL

Buccaneers: Baker Mayfield 2-yard pass to Mike Evans; PAT good … 7-7, ALL

Buccaneers: Chase McLaughlin 53-yard field goal … 10-7, ATL

END Q1: Buccaneers 10, Falcons 7

SECOND QUARTER

There must be something about the start of a quarter for the Falcons offense on Thursday nights. Because the drive that they started in the first quarter ended in a touchdown shortly after the second quarter began.

Cousins threw a 24-yard dart to wide receiver Darnell Mooney at the goal line. Mooney had three defenders in his vicinity, including one in close coverage. Mooney jumped up, caught the pass over the defenders and maintained control as he was tackled to the ground.

That drive consisted of nine plays for 70 yards. Wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge also had an impressive 22-yard catch on a throw in which Cousins threaded the needle.

Well, once again, the Buccaneers answered with another Mayfield-Evans touchdown. This time, Evans caught a 23-yard pass after beating Falcons cornerback Antonio Hamilton Sr. in coverage.

Tampa Bay's scoring drive was just three plays and covered 44 yards. A 53-yard kickoff return by Buccaneers running back Sean Tucker set the Tampa Bay offense up with the short field at Atlanta's 44-yard line.

The Falcons couldn't close the scoring gap but did chip away at it on their next series. Koo redeemed himself with a successful 54-yard field goal that tied up the game at 17. It came after an eight-play drive for 34 yards left Atlanta at the Tampa Bay 36-yard line facing a fourth-and-8. Pitts again had the highlight play, an 18-yard catch.

At this point, the Buccaneers took over with a little more than six minutes until halftime. The Falcons needed to get a stop on defense, considering the Buccaneers would start with the ball in the second half. So, that's potentially back-to-back opportunities to score.

Atlanta's defense did not do its job. Mayfield completed a 4-yard pass to wide receiver Sterling Shepard to regain the lead and cap off an 82-yard drive that lasted seven plays. Running back Rachaad White had a 56-yard run that flipped the field for the Buccaneers.

That left the Falcons with a little less than two minutes to work.

Nothing came out of their nine-play, 31-yard drive that died at the Buccaneers' 39-yard line. Instead of attempting a field goal and risking field position, Atlanta punted.

THIRD QUARTER

Second half, different story. The opening drive did not end in a touchdown. The Falcons' defense forced the Buccaneers to go three-and-out, the first of the game.

That presented the Falcons' offense with the perfect opportunity to tie the game again. However, Atlanta could only cut into its deficit yet again. Koo made a 48-yard field goal to draw the scores closer.

Cousins and Co. started the drive at their own 20-yard line and had been making forward progress until they reached the Tampa Bay red zone. Cousins then completed a 2-yard pass to wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud from the 18-yard line, but an offensive pass interference penalty on Hodge negated the play and pushed the offense back to the 28-yard line. Robinson picked 6 yards up on the ground. Cousins was then sacked for a loss of 8 yards and threw an incomplete pass on third down, leaving the Falcons with a fourth-and-22 situation for Koo.

The Buccaneers inched back to a full touchdown ahead when McLaughlin made a 32-yard field goal on the next drive, which went for nine plays and 56 yards. Bertrand was called for unnecessary roughness on a third-and-1 play that would have converted regardless after a 3-yard reception by wide receiver Chris Godwin. But the penalty gifted the Buccaneers an additional 13 yards and brought them into the Falcons' red zone. Falcons defensive tackle David Onyemata sacked Mayfield for a loss of 7 yards three plays later to bring the field-goal unit onto the field on fourth-and-10.

Still only down by a touchdown, Atlanta's offense continued to make moves and closed out the third quarter in the Tampa Bay red zone. The Falcons were riding momentum from back-to-back 20-plus-yard plays. McCloud had a 22-yard reception. Robinson had a 28-yard run right before the field flipped.

SCORING PLAYS

Falcons: Younghoe Koo 48-yard field goal … 24-20, TAM

Buccaneers: Chase McLaughlin 32-yard field goal … 27-20, TAM

END Q3: Buccaneers 27, Falcons 20

FOURTH QUARTER

In honor of Thursday's throwback-themed uniforms: Oops, the Falcons did it again. They scored on the opening drive of a quarter. Mooney caught a 12-yard pass from Cousins, made a spin move on a defender and finished off the little distance left to the end zone to tie the game.

Atlanta used only four plays in the fourth quarter to do this. The rest of the eight-play, 70-yard drive came at the end of the third.

The tie didn't last long, though. McLaughlin pushed the Buccaneers back ahead with a 53-yard field goal. Tampa Bay had a six-play, 35-yard drive that stalled after the Falcons pressured Mayfield on third down to force a fourth-and-6.

Koo then had the chance to equal the score out with another 54-yard field-goal attempt, but Buccaneers cornerback Tavierre Thomas blocked it by breaking through the right side of the Falcons' line.

The Falcons almost didn't need Koo at all. On third-and-6, Cousins threw a long pass to a wide-open Mooney that was right on target. Mooney dropped it, however, drawing up fourth-and-6 for Koo. The non-scoring drive was eight plays and 34 yards long, and kept the Buccaneers' slight edge intact with time quickly ticking away.

Tampa Bay's edge could have turned into more had it not been for the joint work of Ellis and safety Jessie Bates III. As Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving made a 7-yard run on a first-and-10 from the Atlanta 32-yard line, Bates forced a fumble and Elliss recovered it. The turnover ended a potentially game-clinching drive and gave the Falcons the ball back with a little less than three minutes left.

The series after the turnover didn't go as planned, though. In fact, it led to another turnover.

Running back Tyler Allgeier was tackled for a loss of 2 yards on first down. Cousins was then sacked for a loss of 7 yards. The two paired up for a 4-yard reception on third down, which set up a long fourth-and-15 at the Falcons' 20-yard line. With less than two minutes remaining, Atlanta went for it on fourth down, but Cousins threw an interception. The pass was intended for Mooney but picked off by Buccaneers inside linebacker Lavonte David.

The Falcons' defense stiffened once again and prevented the Buccaneers offense from picking up a first down to finish off the job. Tampa Bay punted after a three-play drive that resulted in minus-14 yards.

After using all of their timeouts to conserve clock, the Falcons were left with one minute and 12 seconds to overcome a three-point disadvantage. Cousins moved the Falcons past midfield with the help of a 17-yard pass to Mooney and a 13-yard pass to McCloud. A 14-yard strike to London covered the rest of the distance needed and Cousins spiked the ball at the Buccaneers' 29-yard line with one second remaining, giving Koo the last chance to tie everything up with a field goal for overtime. A delay-of-game penalty on the Falcons' special teams pushed Koo back 5 yards, providing one more bit of drama.

Nevertheless, Koo made the 52-yarder to set up overtime.

SCORING PLAYS

Buccaneers: Chase McLaughlin 53-yard field goal … 30-27, TAM

Falcons: Younghoe Koo 52-yard field goal ... 30-30, ALL

END Q4: 30-30, ALL

OVERTIME

The Falcons won the coin toss.

More importantly, they won the game.

Atlanta covered 70 yards in four plays to secure the victory. Hodge sealed the deal with a 45-yard touchdown reception.
