Steven King

Special Teams Assistant

Biography

Steven King was named a special teams assistant on Feb. 2, 2024.

King originally joined the Falcons coaching staff as a diversity coaching fellow/special teams in 2022 and will return to special teams in 2024 after serving as an offensive assistant for Atlanta in 2023.

In 2023, the Falcons offense eclipsed 400 total yards of offense on six occasions, tied for the fourth-most games by a Falcons offense, behind the 2018 (nine games), 2016 (eight games) and 2014 (seven games) teams. The unit recorded eight games with more than 375 yards of total offense, sixth in the NFL.

In 2022, Atlanta was one of two teams to have special teams units score multiple touchdowns during the season – a Lorenzo Carter scoop and score off of a blocked punt in Week 2 and a Cordarrelle Patterson 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Week 11. The Falcons blocked multiple punts (Troy Andersen – Week 2; Richie Grant – Week 17) for the first time in a season since at least 2000. Ade Ogundeji also recorded his second-career blocked field goal, blocking a Justin Tucker field goal in Baltimore in Week 16.

Patterson's 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the ninth of his career, setting a new NFL record for the most career kickoff return touchdowns in NFL history. Patterson would be named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week 11. Additionally, second-year returner Avery Williams returned 18 punts for 292 yards and led the NFL with 16.2 yards per punt return in 2022 (min. 15 att.).

Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo closed the 2022 season making 12-of-12 field goal attempts, including three from 50-plus, earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for December and January.

King came to Atlanta having spent three seasons (2019-21) as a special teams quality control coach at the University of North Carolina.

Prior to his time with the Tar Heels, King spent three seasons (2016-18) at Bucknell University where he coached wide receivers and served as the special teams coordinator for his final two seasons.

In 2017, King participated in the NFL's Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowship with the Oakland Raiders, working primarily with special teams.

The Hempstead, N.Y., native has also coached at East Meadow (N.Y.) High School from 2007-10, Nassau Community College in 2011, Wagner College from 2012-13, and the University of Nevada from 2014-15.

King was a four-year letterman at the University of Buffalo, where he served as a team captain and led the team in rushing touchdowns in each of his final three seasons.
