Hometown Huddle
Countless fans and children in gym classes got quite the surprise on Tuesday, October 18th. The Falcons are the only team in the NFL whose entire 53-man roster participates alongside several Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders and members of the Atlanta Falcons Women's Association to make surprise appearances at nine different locations around downtown and the metro Atlanta area. Six stops included United Way-affiliated schools where the players and cheerleaders delivered new sports equipment and promoted physical fitness as part of the NFL's "Play 60" initiative. The remaining stops were visits to public venues around the city which included a local Publix and the Shepherd Center. The Atlanta Falcons Women's Association delivered supplies and spent the morning serving food at Crossroads Community Ministries.
This marked the 13th year of the NFL and United Way's partnership/celebration of Hometown Huddle. Hometown Huddle is a series of volunteer projects implemented on the same day in NFL cities nationwide, teams will be rebuilding playgrounds, hosting youth football clinics, and helping kids stay active for 60 minutes a day as part of "NFL PLAY 60", the League's youth health and fitness campaign.
Now in its 38th year, the United Way/NFL partnership connects "NFL PLAY 60" with United Way's goal of 1.9 million more healthy young people by 2018. Designed to tackle childhood obesity, "NFL PLAY 60" brings together the NFL's long-standing commitment to health and fitness with partner organizations like United Way. "PLAY 60" is also implemented locally, as part of the NFL's in-school, after-school and team-based programs. Since the program was launched in 2007, the NFL has committed $200 million to youth health and fitness through programming, grants, and media time for public service announcements.
