The City of Atlanta will cheer on the playoff-bound Atlanta Falcons during a Gameday Pep Rally at noon Monday in the atrium of Atlanta City Hall, 55 Trinity Avenue, S.W.

The city-wide rally, hosted by Atlanta City Councilman Ivory Lee Young and Mayor Kasim Reed, coincides with the 8:30 p.m. game against the rival New Orleans Saints on Monday night at the Georgia Dome.

Because of the success of the Atlanta Falcons this season and for their contributions in the community, the Atlanta City Council by legislation has proclaimed Dec. 27 as "Atlanta Falcons Day," and Mayor Kasim Reed will present the organization with the Phoenix Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual or organization in the city.

All fans are encouraged to attend the community rally to support the Atlanta Falcons. Every Atlantan is asked wear red and black, whether at the rally or not, in support of the Falcons.

"The Atlanta Falcons football organization is far more than football," Councilman Young said. "On the 27th of December, let us all 'rise up' and show the world how committed Atlanta fans are. Join us at city hall to celebrate our heroes, the Atlanta Falcons.

"Their contributions on and off the football field are worthy of recognition. We, the fans of the Atlanta Falcons, now have an obligation not only to thank them but to firmly support them in asserting our role as the twelfth man on the team. City government, businesses, residents and fans of the Atlanta Falcons send a message loud and clear, that we are united in our passion for our football team and we will enthusiastically support them through every step of their journey this season."

The Falcons and Saints rivalry is one of the biggest in NFL sports. Atlanta leads the series 44-38 and 1-0 in postseason play. The Falcons beat the Saints 27-24 in overtime on Sept. 26 in the Superdome.

City officials say the pep rally will send a rousing cheer in support of the Atlanta Falcons prior to their televised Monday Night football game against the New Orleans Saints.
