Falcons' pass rush shows up in loss to Chargers

The Falcons defense recorded a season-high five sacks in the Week 13 loss to the Chargers.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons turned a corner defensively Sunday with a season-high five sacks against the Los Angeles Chargers, but it was difficult to celebrate the unit since the team ultimately lost, 17-13.

"I won't be gloating about the pass rush today," Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said. "We have to go back and look at it, look at what went well, what we did better. … But just give the guys credit. They got the sacks."

"They" would be outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie, who had two, and inside linebacker Kaden Elliss, defensive tackle David Onyemata and defensive lineman Kentavius Street, who had one apiece.

Elliss got the ball rolling in the first quarter with a sack for a loss of 9 yards on second-and-8 in Atlanta's red zone. An incomplete pass trying to make up the distance followed, and the Chargers had to settle for a field goal.

Ebiketie then got a piece of the action in the second quarter, sacking Herbert for a loss of 2 yards on a third-and-4 at the Atlanta 31-yard line. Again, that forced the Chargers into a field goal.

Ebiketie got to Herbert again before halftime on a first-and-10 in the red zone. Two incomplete passes followed, and the Chargers added just another field goal.

That put the Falcons at three sacks by halftime, already matching their season high coming into the game, and kept the Chargers out of the end zone.

"Obviously the No. 1 thing everyone talks about is the sacks, and those showed up big time today for us," Falcons safety Justin Simmons said. "Those guys played their tails off, and we covered really well."

Street had his moment in the third quarter on a second-and-12 in Los Angeles territory. He sacked Herbert for a loss of 7 yards, which proved to be clutch since the next pass – a 12-yard completion – otherwise would have picked up the first down. The Chargers instead punted a play later.

Onyemata then sacked Herbert for a 1-yard loss in the fourth quarter on a second-and-8. The third-down pass was too short, and the Chargers punted soon after.

It was the second-most sacks Herbert has taken this season. Only the Cleveland Browns brought Herbert down more, with six sacks in the Chargers' Week 9 win.

"It should have been six (sacks), man," Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said. "I missed that one at the end. I had him and let him go, but I still got the stop and got a field goal. Just amazing improvement by the whole group."

Herbert completed 16 of his 23 passes for 147 yards against Atlanta; he did not have a touchdown or interception.

The Chargers, as a whole, rushed for just 56 yards, their second-lowest total this season. They had 55 rushing yards in their Week 9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 131 net passing yards and 56 net rushing yards by the Chargers were both the lowest totals the Falcons' defense has allowed through 12 games. Atlanta limited the Pittsburgh Steelers to 133 yards passing in its Week 1 loss and held the New Orleans Saints to 96 yards rushing in its Week 10 loss.

"We want to build on that momentum," Ebiketie said. "Going into next week, why not build from this performance and just get even more sacks? We see what that can do for our defense."
