'Let's do it until they stop it': Falcons run game rolling with Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgeier

Both running backs eclipsed 100 yards from scrimmage in Atlanta's win against the Carolina Panthers Sunday night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As he always does, Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson went up to his veteran quarterback and asked Kirk Cousins what he liked. He's the one executing the game plan, is it working for him? What changes would he like enacted?

Well, Cousins didn't hesitate in his answer.

"I like running the football," Cousins responded.

The very first play of the game was a 6-yard gain by Bijan Robinson. From there, the ground game never lacked for pop.

By the time Robinson asked Cousins what he liked about the offensive performance at halftime, the Falcons had over 70 rushing yards. Both Robinson and Tyler Allgeier were averaging more than 5 yards per carry. So...

"Let's do it until they stop it," Cousins said of the rushing attack.

And really, the Panthers' run defense could never really find its footing in a decisive Falcons win. By the time the clock struck zero, the Falcons secured a 38-20 win with Robinson and Allgeier notching over 95 yards on the ground, apiece, and the team gaining more than 200 yards on the ground before the final kneel downs took that total to 198.

Postgame Analysis 16x9

Robinson finished with 95 rushing yards, 6.3 yards per carry and two rushing touchdowns (his first multi-rushing touchdown performance of his career). He also added 10 yards as a receiver, finishing with 105 yards from scrimmage. Funnily enough, that's exactly how many yards Allgeier had on the ground Sunday evening. He averaged 5.8 yards per carry in the game and added a touchdown of his own.

According to the broadcast, this is the first time since Oct. 2016 that the Falcons had two running backs with over 100 yards from scrimmage. The last two to do that for Atlanta? Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman in a memorable win against Denver. Sunday night, it was the one-two punch of Robinson and Allgeier.

"(We) just kept hitting 'em, hitting 'em, hitting 'em," Allgeier said postgame, "and we just slowly started to wear them down."

After the game, head coach Raheem Morris said the Falcons' last two wins showed an offense that can win while relying on two different styles of play. Last Thursday, Cousins' 509 passing yards put a tally in the Falcons' win column for an overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This Sunday, the team's 198 rushing yards did that, too.

"I think we are just taking what (defenses) are giving us," Morris said.

Regardless of why it happened, the Falcons needed an offensive performance like this one. It was a performance that led to a decisive win, their first of 2024.

"Sometimes," Cousins said, "you throw to score and you run to win, and being able to run the football makes a difference."
