Game Notes: Falcons vs. 49ers

  • The Falcons finished the 2012 season with a 14-4 overall record and advanced to the NFC Championship game for the third time in franchise history. In five seasons under Head Coach Mike Smith, the Falcons have posted five consecutive winning seasons and earned four trips to the playoffs.
  • WR Julio Jones had the best game of his career, catching 11 passes for 182 yards with two touchdowns. Jones set a Falcons franchise-record for the most receiving yards in a playoff game, topping Alfred Jenkins who posted 155 yards against the Cowboys in the NFC Divisional Playoff round in 1981. Jones also tied WR Roddy White's club postseason record of 11 catches. White caught 11 passes in Atlanta's Wild Card game at Arizona following the 2008 season.
  • Sunday marked Jones' first 100-yard game in the playoffs and the first 100-yard game by a Falcons receiver since WR Tony Martin posted 129 yards on five catches at Minnesota (1/17/99) in the NFC Championship game. Jones became the sixth Falcon receiver to post 100-plus receiving yards in a postseason game.
  • QB Matt Ryan completed 30 of 42 pass attempts and set Falcons playoff records with 396 yards and a 114.8 passer rating. Ryan also threw three touchdown passes for the second consecutive game, becoming the first quarterback in team history to throw three-or-more touchdown passes in consecutive playoff games.
  • Including playoffs, Ryan has posted 42 multi-touchdown games and he has led the Falcons to a 33-9 record in in those games. Additionally, the Pro Bowl signal caller has posted 20 career games with three-or-more touchdowns (including playoffs) and owns an 18-2 record when he throws three-plus touchdowns, including a 7-2 mark this season.
  • Ryan has posted a passer rating of 100-or-better in 34 games during his career (including playoffs), leading the Falcons to a 32-2 mark (.941) in those game. He has also recorded a QB rating of 100-or-higher in 21 home games and Atlanta is 20-1 in those games.
  • Jones' two touchdown receptions were the most by a Falcon in a single postseason game since WR Terance Mathis had two TD receptions at Minnesota (1/17/99) in the NFC Championship game. Jones is just the third receiver in team history to record multiple touchdown catches in a single playoff game.
  • Jones 135 receiving yards in the first half were the most in franchise history in the first half of a playoff game. Additionally, he is the first Falcon receiver to record 100 receiving yards in the first half of a playoff game.
  • According to ESPN Stats and Information, Jones' 182 receiving yards where the second-most allowed to a single receiver by the 49ers all season long.
  • With seven catches for 100 yards, White notched his first career 100-yard game in the postseason. White and Jones also became the first teammates to post 100 receiving yards in a single playoff game in franchise history. Including playoffs, White and Jones have topped the century mark in the same game four times, including twice this season.
  • In five career playoff games, White has 34 receptions and 369 yards. He surpassed Mathis' franchise record of 322 career postseason receiving yards and is now the Falcons all-time postseason leader in receptions (34) and yards (369).
  • 13-time Pro Bowler TE Tony Gonzalez posted his best playoff performance with eight catches for 78 yards and one touchdown. Gonzalez also caught touchdown passes in each of the Falcons postseason games this season.
