What stood out in Falcons loss to Jaguars in preseason finale

The Falcons wrapped up their preseason slate Friday inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Jaguars. Here's what we learned with roster cuts on the horizon.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons teased their home crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday night when the whole team, including quarterback Kirk Cousins, took the field in full-pads for warmups.

That's all that it was, though. A tease.

When game time arrived, all of the starters were in street clothes. A fair share of the backups switched out their attire, too. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was one of them.

The change made sense. The Falcons sat a similar group last week against the Baltimore Ravens. It would have been unexpected for the team to go back on that mindset in Atlanta's third and final preseason game.

Anyway, below are three takeaways from the Falcons' 31-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

SKEWED SERIES

Although the Falcons chose to sit their starters, the Jaguars did not. On either side of the ball. It was rather noticeable, too, as Jacksonville took a 21-0 lead into halftime. To be fair, only 14 points were from the Jaguars' first team.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence played two series, spanning the entire first quarter and nearly half the second quarter. He ultimately completed eight of his 10 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Both scoring plays went to another starter in tight end Evan Engram. He caught darts from 6 and 5 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively.

Falcons cornerback Anthony Johnson broke up a pass Lawrence intended for starting wide receiver Gabe Davis. The other incompletion just fell flat, also aimed at Davis.

The two series Lawrence led produced a total of 154 offensive yards on 22 plays. There were 59 yards rushing.

The Jaguars sent their starting defense out, as well. That unit played longer than its counterpart, sticking it out through the whole first half. Jacksonville's starters limited Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke to 8 of 17 for 81 yards. He was sacked once by starting defensive end Travon Walker for a loss of 4 yards.

Atlanta also had 21 yards rushing, giving it 98 net offensive yards through two quarters.

DOUBLE DUTY

The Falcons are trying something with defensive back Kevin King's. He started Friday night's game at safety rather than his usual cornerback role.

King was a starting cornerback against the Miami Dolphins in the Falcons' preseason opener, and he did well. King forced a fumble, had an interception and made three tackles.

Against the Ravens, though, King didn't take any defensive snaps. He solely participated on five special teams plays.

Friday wasn't King's first turn at safety, though. He played at that spot during the Falcons' scrimmage on Wednesday, too.

So, King's role has evolved late in the preseason. Someone who wouldn't be shocked about this development is Falcons assistant head coach/defense Jerry Gray, who coached King from 2020-21 at the Green Bay Packers.

"(He's) versatile," Gray said last week. "He could play corner. He could play nickel. He could play dime. We got money. Then, if he needs to play safety, he can play safety. That's the good thing about him. He's very smart, understanding what he can do and what he can't do. As long as we use him the right way, he's on our team, I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised."

King made two stops against the Jaguars' starting offense and another against the backups.

With safety DeMarcco Hellams out for what Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said would be a significant amount of time due to an ankle injury, the Falcons may be looking at King to help provide depth in the meantime. The NFL's 53-man roster deadline is this Tuesday. King being able to successfully fill in two different spots only strengthens his case.

BUBBLE BOYS

Speaking of the upcoming cuts, the preseason essentially led to an audition among a few specific players who took the field Friday.

Here are some standout players who have been fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster this preseason and how they performed in the final exhibition game:

—CB Natrone Brooks: Entered Friday with a team-high 14 tackles, one for a loss and a forced fumble. Added six tackles against the Jaguars.

—OLB Bradlee Anae: Entered Friday with a team-high three quarterback hurries, half a sack and four tackles. Added two tackles and a sack for a 5-yard loss against the Jaguars.

—ILB Milo Eifler: Entered Friday with the second-most tackles (11) on the Falcons, along with a stop for loss and quarterback hurry. Added six tackles against the Jaguars.

—ILB Donavan Mutin: Entered Friday with 10 tackles, third most on the team. Added 18 tackles in the final preseason game.

-- WR Chris Blair: Entered Friday with the third-most receiving yards in the league (136) through two preseason games. Finished with an additional two catches for 18 yards against the Jaguars.

-- RB Carlos Washington Jr.: Entered Friday with 64 rushing yards in the preseason. Finished with only 7 rushing yards on four carries against the Jaguars.

-- QB Taylor Heinicke: Entered Friday with 125 passing yards in the preseason and finished with 81 against the Jaguars.

Practice squad is an option, too. That'll be determined after the 53-man roster.
