FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Kirk Cousins had a historic night in Week 5 and it earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Cousins had a career-high 509 passing yards, the most in franchise history, and four touchdowns — including a 45-yard walk-off to KhaDarel Hodge — while completing 72.4% of his passes in a 36-30 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hodge had a great view of his quarterback's performance.

"I was on the sideline when I wasn't in, so I started watching the show myself. I was like, 'Oh, he hot tonight,'" Hodge said after the game. "I said, 'They let him get in the groove.' He got in the groove ... he took over tonight, and that's big time."

Cousins had previously reached the 400-yard mark eight times in his 13-year NFL career but never crossed the 500-yard threshold. Matt Ryan is the only other quarterback in Falcons history who has thrown for more than 500 yards in a single game(503), and he was coincidently inducted into the Falcons' Ring of Honor that same night.

This season, Cousins ranks fifth in passing yards and leads the league in comeback wins with three game-winning drives already. Through five games this season, Cousins has racked up 1373 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 67.2% of passes. He's on pace to record over 4,500 passing yards this season, a milestone he's only reached twice in his career.

This is the third time a Falcon has been named player of the week this season. Safety Jessie Bates III and inside linebacker Troy Andersen both were named in the defensive category for prior performances.

Cousins is the first offensive player for Atlanta to get the recognition since 2022. It's also his first time receiving these honors since the 2022 season, and his eighth time overall.

"He has been outstanding," Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said of Cousins. " ... His ability to get better and better every single week has been exactly what you've wanted from a coaching standpoint."

Under the familiar lights of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Cousins led five receivers to 60+ yard performances and the Falcons to a thrilling overtime win.
