ATLANTA — For the first time this season, the Atlanta Falcons truly put a game away, defeating the New York Giants inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium to rise above .500 and move to 8-7 on the year.
The last time Atlanta won by at least 27 points was in Week 12 of 2020, when the Falcons bested the Las Vegas Raiders, 43-6.
Final score: 34-7
Why it's important: The Falcons made a major change in an already short week of preparation, switching from veteran Kirk Cousins to rookie Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback. The potentially risky move paid off. Atlanta remains in the playoff picture because of its win, regardless of how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do in their own Sunday game against the Dallas Cowboys (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC).
If the Buccaneers also win, then the Falcons remain a game behind in the NFC South race, but Atlanta can still win the division if it matches Tampa Bay's final record since the Falcons swept the Buccaneers and therefore hold the tiebreaker. If the Buccaneers lose, then the Falcons are back in the lead for the same reason.
Key takeaway: Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. led the Falcons to the dub in his first career start, playing exactly how the Falcons needed him to: cleanly and efficiently. Penix completed 18 of his 27 passes for 202 yards with no touchdowns. He technically recorded an interception, but it was tight end Kyle Pitts who bobbled the ball into Giants cornerback Cor'Dale Flott's hands.
Key moment: Falcons safety Jessie Bates III's pick-six in the second quarter flipped the momentum of Sunday's game, and Atlanta never looked back.
- More: The Giants were up, 7-3, and in Falcons territory when quarterback Drew Lock attempted a second-and-7 pass to wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson and found Bates instead. Bates returned the interception 55 yards to the end zone, pushing the Falcons ahead, 10-7.
- The pick marked No. 4 of the season for Bates and No. 24 in his career. It was his first pick-six this season, third overall.
- The Giants' next drive consisted of only five plays for 10 yards. They punted.
- In turn, the Falcons compiled a nine-play, 86-yard scoring drive. Running back Bijan Robinson ultimately scored on a 4-yard run.
- Atlanta's 17-7 lead at halftime created a much different vibe than the pair of goose eggs that donned the scoreboard after the first quarter.
Standout performance: Bijan Robinson. The Falcons running back finished with 22 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter and a 2-yard run in the third quarter. That gives him 10 rushing touchdowns this season. He also finished with 103 yards from scrimmage meaning Robinson has surpassed the 100-yard mark in nine of his last 10 games.
Number to know: Two. The amount of interceptions the Falcons defense returned for touchdowns. Safety Jessie Bates III cut off a pass meant for Giants wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson and returned it 55 yards to score in the second quarter. Outside linebacker Matthew Judon grabbed a pass tipped by defensive lineman Zach Harrison and took it 27 yards to the end zone in the third quarter. It was the first touchdown for Judon in his nine-year career. Sunday also marked the second time in franchise history Atlanta has had two pick-sixes in a single game. The first was in 1983.
Player milestones:
- With a 6-yard run at the 10:09 mark in the first quarter, running back Bijan Robinson became the fastest Falcons player (32 games) to reach 3,000 career scrimmage yards since running back William Andrews (31 games) in 1980.
- Kicker Riley Patterson's 52-yard field goal in the second quarter marked his first make of the 2024 season. It was just a yard short of his career long, set in 2022 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- Outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie recorded a sack in the third quarter, giving him four in the last four games. The only other player with four sacks since Week 13 is Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Ebiketie has five on the season.
Injury updates:
- Cornerback Antonio Hamilton Sr. injured his quad in the first quarter and was ruled out during halftime.
- Wide receiver Drake London injured his hamstring in the fourth quarter and was ruled questionable to return.
A quick tweet: The Falcons editorial staff of Tori McElhaney, Will McFadden, Terrin Waack and Amna Subhan share their gut reactions to Sunday's outcome in 280 characters or less.
- McElhaney: I said all week that a rookie quarterback's best friend is a dominant run game, and while I still believe that to be true, Michael Penix's best friend in his first start was a dominant (and touchdown-scoring) defense.
- McFadden: This game was awesome. They should do this more often.
- Waack: Good for MPJ.
- Subhan: The Falcons defense is clicking on all cylinders, and it's fun to watch
