What happened in Falcons' Week 1 home loss to Steelers

Here is a quarter-by-quarter breakdown that’s easy to consume and recaps all the action from Sunday’s Falcons-Steelers season opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons began their 2024 season Sunday with an 18-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Every game recap this 2024 season will be broken down by quarter for right-at-the-buzzer consumption. Atlanta won the coin toss for its season opener against Pittsburgh and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

FIRST QUARTER

After all the drama and speculation surrounding Russell Wilson's game status, the Steelers' starting quarterback was ultimately ruled inactive Sunday. That left Justin Fields to start in his place.

Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins took the field for the first time in a Falcons uniform. Because Atlanta chose to receive, Cousins and Co. wasted no time in showing off what they've been working on in the preseason.

The Falcons' debut offensive drive began at their own 30-yard line and ended at the Steelers' 6-yard line, where Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo made a 24-yard field goal to put the first points on the board. Cousins completed 3 of his 5 passes for 30 yards in that time, while running backs Bijan Robinson (five) and Tyler Allgeier had six combined carries for 34 yards. The drive was good for 12 plays and 64 yards overall.

Cousins did have a scare during that series, though, when his first pass attempt of the season, intended for wide receiver Darnell Mooney, was nearly picked off by Steelers cornerback Donte Jackson. The interception was dropped, saving Cousins from the error.

All in all, the Falcons' opening drive showed the offense is capable of moving the ball. Sure, there were clean-up areas, but that's to be expected in Week 1, especially on the first drive.

Anyway, then the Steelers then took their turn — and responded. After 10 plays of their own for 31 yards, Pittsburgh tied up the score with a 57-yard field goal by kicker Chris Boswell.

Things got even more interesting after that. Really, three things.

First, Cousins was actually intercepted during the Falcons' second series on his seventh pass attempt of the game. Steelers safety DeShon Elliott grabbed a short, up-the-middle pass meant for wide receiver Drake London. There were two Steelers defenders in the area.

Second, there was a moment where seemingly the teams, fans and reporters thought the Steelers faced a fourth-and-1, because that's what the scoreboard showed. However, it was actually a first-and-10. So, when Falcons cornerback Mike Hughes and defensive tackle Kentavius Street stopped Steelers running back Jaylen Warren a yard behind the line of scrimmage, Atlanta rejoiced. The celebration ended when officials signaled that it was indeed second down.

Third, on the very next play after the confusion, a scuffle broke out following a run by Steelers running back Najee Harris. He was brought down by Falcons outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie and safety Jessie Bate III. Controlled chaos followed, but never escalated to the point where flags were thrown.

The opening 15 minutes clearly did not lack drama.

Steelers: Chris Boswell 57-yard field goal … 3-3, TIE

SECOND QUARTER

The next 15 minutes weren't as hectic, but still had moments.

For example, the Steelers took an early lead after adding another long field goal. This time, Boswell found success from 51 yards out. That came near the six-minute mark.

Then, there were two successive plays on the Falcons' own scoring drive that led to the first touchdown from either team.

The Falcons faced first-and-10 at the Steelers' 17-yard line. Cousins was sacked for a loss of 7 yards and fumbled the ball after taking a hit by Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt. It looked like another turnover until refs called Watt for defensive offsides, negating the play and giving Atlanta 5 yards.

That placed the Falcons at the Steelers' 12-yard line with a fresh set of downs. Well, those weren't needed. Because on that first play, Cousins escaped pressure, scrambled to his left and found tight end Kyle Pitts wide open in the end zone near the front left pylon. A 12-yard pass gave the Falcons the lead back.

— NOTE: That touchdown catch marked No. 7 of Pitts' career. His single-season high stands at three from 2023. … That touchdown pass was the 271st of Cousins' career. His single-season high is 35 from 2020.

That two-play sequence showed how the Falcons can capitalize on a mini victory and turn it into a big one. Cousins has said multiple times the Falcons want to play with an edge. That previewed the unit's ability to do so.

The seven points proved crucial in allowing theFalcons to carry a lead into halftime. After the touchdown ,there were about 30 seconds left until the halftime buzzer, and Atlanta seemed poised to take a 10-6 lead into the locker room. A big play from Pittsburgh wide receiver George Pickens moved the Steelers into field-goal range, though, and Boswell was good from 44 yards as teams headed to their respective locker rooms with the Falcons holding a 10-9 lead.

SCORING PLAYS

Steelers: Chris Boswell 51-yard field goal ... 6-3, PIT
Falcons: Kirk Cousins 12-yard pass to Kyle Pitts, PAT good … 10-6, ATL
Steelers: Chris Boswell 44-yard field goal … 10-9, ATL

HALFTIME: Falcons 10, Steelers 9

THIRD QUARTER

The Steelers offense began the second half with possession, and the Falcons defense forced their first three-and-out. The quick-turn series was highlighted by a third-down sack by Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, who dropped Fields for a 15-yard loss and forced a punt.

— NOTE: The quarterback hit was No. 115 of Jarrett's career, which ties him with defensive end John Abraham for *the Falcons' all-time record*.

After the defense's big play, though, Atlanta's offense fell short. Robinson moved the ball well on the ground — four consecutive carries for 19 yards — but then center Drew Dalman's snap hit tight end Ross Dwelley as he motioned across the formation, and Watt recovered the fumble. The Steelers still could not turn the turnover into a touchdown. They made it to the Falcons' 38-yard line, where Boswell came back out to make a 56-yard field goal. This gave Pittsburgh a two-point lead over Atlanta with about eight minutes remaining in the period.

Cousins took two major hits on the next series.

On a third-and-12 play at Atlanta's 28-yard line, he was sacked by Watt for a loss of 9 yards, fumbling in the process. Right tackle Kaleb McGary jumped on the loose ball. Regardless, there were two flags on the play that canceled out the action.

Then, on second-and-8 at Atlanta's 30-yard line, Cousins was sacked again for a loss of 9 yards, this time by Pittsburgh defensive tackle Montravius Adams Sr. Cousins held onto the ball, drawing up third-and-17. The Falcons were unable to convert, with a 4-yard pass to tight end Charlie Woerner coming up short, so they punted.

This takedown was technically Cousins' first sack. The Steelers had the others wiped away by penalties.

The Steelers responded with yet another field goal, though, further padding their lead to five points. Boswell booted a 40-yarder with 25 seconds remaining until the fourth and final quarter. The Falcons got one play off — a Robinson run for 5 yards — before the field was flipped.

SCORING PLAYS

Steelers: Chris Boswell 56-yard field goal … 12-10, PIT
Steelers: Chris Boswell 40-yard field goal … 15-10, PIT

END Q3: Steelers 15, Falcons 10

FOURTH QUARTER

The Falcons weren't able to convert, punting shortly after the final period began.

That's when the Steelers started to pound the Falcons defense. Pittsburgh ate up seven minutes and 14 seconds of the clock, going from its 22-yard line to Atlanta's 6-yard line. That's where the Steelers' drive ended. Inside linebacker Nate Landman stuffed Fields at the line of scrimmage on a fourth-and-1 play, forcing a turnover on downs.

The Falcons failed to cash in on that clutch play by Landman, going three-and-out for the second time in the quarter.

The Steelers then did the same.

Robinson ran for 13 yards when he got his hands back on the ball during the Falcons' ensuing drive, which presented the last best chance to recapture the lead late in the game. On the next play, however, Cousins was intercepted for the second time. Jackson, who had the near-pick earlier, snatched the pass intended for wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud at the Pittsburgh 33-yard line and proceeded to return it 49 yards to the Atlanta 18-yard line.

From there, the Steelers cemented their victory with Boswell's sixth field goal. This final one was a 25-yarder, his shortest of the afternoon.

The Falcons tried to pull off a 28-second rally, starting at their 30-yard line, but were unable to do so. A 34-yard completion between Cousins and McCloud was followed up by another Watts sack to kill the comeback.

In his Falcons debut, Cousins completed 16 of his 26 passes for 155 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown. He was sacked twice during the game.

Fields, making his debut for the Steelers, completed 17 of his 23 passes for 156 yards. He also ran the ball 14 times for 57 yards and was sacked twice.
