ATLANTA — There was no mistaking how Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris felt after his team's 44-38 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers.
The first words out of his mouth were: "Really disappointing day on defense."
That's a notion Morris doubled down on, with an explanation, and referred back to multiple times throughout his postgame press conference.
"I was really disappointed in our defense today, especially based off how they've been playing and how we've been going; how we've been attacking the quarterback; how we've been able to manipulate in terms of getting after people," Morris said. "I was really fired up with where we were going, the direction we were going. We took a step back today — a huge step back."
Overall, the Falcons' defense gave up 425 yards to the Panthers in Week 18. It marked the third-highest total by an opponent and the fifth time Atlanta allowed more than 400 yards this season.
Panthers quarterback Bryce Young completed 25 of his 34 passes (74%) for 251 yards and a season-high three touchdowns. He was never sacked nor intercepted, marking only the second time this season the Falcons failed to do either. The other occasion came against New Orleans in Week 10, Atlanta's only other division loss this year.
Young's first touchdown pass came in the second quarter on a second-and-10 play from Atlanta's 33-yard line. Young had a clean pocket to comfortably chuck the ball deep to running back Mile Sanders, who was wide open when he caught the ball within 10 yards of the end zone. Falcons outside linebacker Matthew Judon was closet in coverage, chasing Sanders down from behind, while safeties Justin Simmons and Jessie Bates III were too far right.
The second touchdown pass happened in the third quarter on a fourth-and-1 play at the Falcons' 12-yard line. Again, Young threw the ball untouched. This one to tight end Tommy Tremble, who stood uncontested in the end zone after getting lost during the play. Simmons and cornerback A.J. Terrell were the nearest Falcons defenders, but not near enough.
The third and final touchdown pass was also in the third quarter and on a second-and-9 play at Atlanta's 9-yard line. This time, the pocket quickly closed in on Young, but the former No. 1 pick was quicker with his release. He sent a dart to wide receiver David Moore, who caught the ball 5 yards shy of the end zone. Falcons cornerback Clark Phillips III tried to make a diving tackle but missed.
Simmons chalked the scores up to the Falcons' secondary not winning its 1-on-1 matchups. Young's mobility certainly didn't help in that regard.
"The key emphasis there is the plaster in coverage and make sure we have good integrity in our rush lanes," Simmons said. "When he does break free, the guys that are free are able to go pull him up and then the guys that are in coverage, you got to plaster, cover for three seconds longer, whatever the case may be.
"There's no pointing fingers. We just didn't do a good enough job on either end — coverage with plastering and rushing them."
Young hurt the Falcons on foot, too. He kept the ball five times to pick up 24 yards and two touchdowns.
The first touchdown of the game was a 2-yard scramble from Young in the second quarter. He avoided getting sacked and broke multiple tackles with a run up the middle.
Young then had a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter where he wasn't touched until he crossed the goal line.
"Watching Bryce run into the end zone, I think he made a couple people miss," Morris said. "That was magic by him and a nice job by him.
"But we were just not good enough across the board on defense. You can go through just about any play you want to on defense today and really criticize and critique the things we need to be criticized and critiqued [on]. We just got to be straight-up honest with ourselves. That was not good enough."
The final nail in the defense's coffin came in overtime. Carolina began at its 30-yard line and marched 70 yards downfield in 10 plays, solidifying its victory with a 1-yard touchdown run from Sanders. Of the Panthers' 10 overtime plays, only two were for no gain or negative yardage.
Young completed all five of his pass attempts for 56 yards in the extra period. The Panthers then had an additional five carries for 14 yards.
For the second consecutive week, the Falcons' offense didn't have a chance to answer.
"Losing to a team we're not supposed to lose to, it's unfortunate," Falcons outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie said. "We have to go into the offseason with that feeling."
