LANDOVER, Md. — It was a tale of two halves — and then some — between the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders in Week 17. The Falcons came out strong and held the advantage in the first half. The Commanders responded after halftime and took control in the second. That split led to overtime, and the Commanders came out victorious at Northwest Stadium to put a major damper on the Falcons' playoff chances.
Final score: 30-24
Why it's important: With the loss, the Falcons fall to 8-8 and out of the NFC South lead. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, meanwhile, defeated the Carolina Panthers earlier Sunday to improve to 9-7 and reclaim the top spot. Atlanta's last chance to win the division comes down to Week 18. The Falcons host the Panthers and the Buccaneers host the New Orleans Saints.
Atlanta needs two things to happen in order to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2017: The Falcons need to win their game, and the Buccaneers need to lose theirs. If Tampa Bay wins, it doesn't matter what Atlanta does.
Key moment: A defensive penalty on Atlanta in the third quarter extended a Washington drive and shifted the momentum from the Falcons, who held a 10-point lead at the time, to the Commanders.
- More: The Commanders' offense faced third-and-22 at their own 19-yard line when quarterback Jayden Daniels was sacked by outside linebacker Arnold Ebiketie for a loss of 4 yards. The Falcons' defense, however, couldn't celebrate the stop. Because instead of drawing up a fourth down, outside linebacker DeAngelo Malone was called for illegal contact. The penalty gifted Washington 5 yards and — more importantly — a fresh set of downs.
- What followed was a 15-play, 84-yard scoring drive that took seven minutes and 47 seconds off the game clock. Daniels ultimately completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz, bringing the Commanders within three points of the Falcons.
- The Commanders converted four third downs during their scoring drive. They also had a successful fourth-down conversion.
- On the Falcons' ensuing drive, the offense went three-and-out.
- When they got the ball back, the Commanders marched down the field and scored again — this time on a 2-yard run by running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. It was another long drive, spanning 14 plays and 70 yards, that lasted for seven minutes and three seconds. The touchdown gave Washington a 21-17 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Standout performance: A.J. Terrell. The Falcons cornerback essentially eliminated Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin as the No. 1 option for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Terrell, for the most part, blanketed McLaurin throughout the game. Case in point: McLaurin finished with one reception on seven targets for just 5 yards. Normally the Commanders' top producer through the air, McLaurin entered this game with 1,023 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns — second-most among NFL receivers.
Number to know: 3. The amount of fourth-down attempts the Commanders not only attempted but successfully converted. Those conversions allowed Washington to keep key drives alive, especially in the second half.
Player milestones:
- Rookie inside linebacker JD Bertrand made his first career sack in the first quarter. He was the Falcons' fifth-round draft pick (No. 143 overall).
- Veteran inside linebacker Kaden Elliss caught his first career interception in the second quarter. The pick came in his 81st appearance.
- With his 14-yard reception at the 9:10 mark in the second quarter, wide receiver Drake London broke 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career. Read more about the milestone here.
- Running back Bijan Robinson's 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter marked his 12th rushing touchdown this season. That's the most by a Falcons player since running back Michael Turner in 2010.
Game summary in a tweet: The Falcons editorial staff of Tori McElhaney, Will McFadden, Terrin Waack and Amna Subhan share their gut reactions to Sunday's outcome in 280 characters or less.
- McElhaney: Atlanta's offense ran out of power in the third quarter, while the defense ran out of gas. The hole dug in those 15 minutes was too deep to escape.
- McFadden: When the Falcons were dictating the style of this game, they looked great. Then the third quarter happened, and it all changed.
- Waack: The Falcons no longer control their playoff fate.
- Subhan: Time of possession was an absolute killer. You just can't give your opponent that much of an opportunity.
Settling the storylines:
- Containing Jayden Daniels: The Commanders quarterback entered the game leading his team in rushing with 737 yards on the ground this season and averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Limiting Daniels' mobility was a key priority for the Falcons' defense heading into Sunday night.
- Speaking of the defense: The Falcons' pass rush has caught fire in recent weeks, totaling 16 sacks in the last four games. Because of Daniels' mobility, the Commanders presented a real test for the Falcons in this regard. Atlanta didn't do so hot against mobile quarterbacks at the start of the season, but things have changed after the bye week.
- Player of the Game?: Michael Penix Jr. was Tori McElhaney's prediction because of the narrative surrounding him and Daniels as rookie quarterbacks with different journeys to Sunday. This game was just the second start of Penix's career, and his first on the road. On the other side, it was the 16th for Daniels. The Commanders drafted Daniels No. 2 overall this offseason and immediately made him their starter. The Falcons brought Penix in with the No. 8 overall pick but already had their starting quarterback in veteran Kirk Cousins. The plan was for Penix to learn and develop behind Cousins. Obviously, that plan changed two weeks ago.
Looking forward: The Falcons host the Panthers inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium for their regular-season finale. The date and time of their Week 18 game has yet to be determined. It will take place on either Saturday or Sunday.
