STELLAR STATS

— With five sacks against the Commanders, the Falcons have had three or more sacks in five straight games. Atlanta has not accomplished that feat in a single season since 1997, when it strung together eight games with at least three sacks. Also, the Falcons' streak is the longest currently active in the NFL.

— Inside linebacker Kaden Elliss is the first Falcons player ever to record at least 100 tackles, five sacks and an interception in a single season. His first career interception and nine tackles against the Commanders put him at 139 tackles, five sacks and an interception in 2024.

According to Next Gen Stats, Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell covered Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin on 32 of his 34 routes (94.1%), allowing just one reception for 5 yards on seven targets. McLaurin entered Sunday's game averaging 4.9 receptions per game, 14.1 yards per reception and 68.6 yards per game.

— Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels rushed for a season-high 127 yards against the Falcons, which gives him 864 yards rushing on the season. No other rookie quarterback in NFL history has rushed for that many yards in their first season.

— With 1-yard touchdown runs in the first and second quarters, Bijan Robinson became the first Falcons player to rush for two touchdowns in back-to-back games since running back Devonta Freeman did so in Weeks 12 and 13 of the 2016 season. Robinson's other scores came on 2- and 4-yard runs in the Week 16 win against the New York Giants. That double-whammy also makes Robinson one of five players to have rushed for multiple touchdowns in consecutive games this season.

— The difference in time of possession during the first half was 3:30, in favor of the Falcons. Atlanta ran 36 plays compared to Washington's 24. The difference in the second half was 10:59, in favor of the Commanders. Washington ran 41 plays compared to Atlanta's 24, including a third quarter that saw the Commanders run 25 plays and the Falcons run three.

OBSCURE FACTS

— The Falcons entered Week 17 with a 50% chance of making the playoffs, according to the New York Times' simulator. That dropped to 13% with the Falcons' loss to the Commanders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' win against the Carolina Panthers. Now, in order to win the NFC South and reach the postseason, the Falcons must beat the Panthers and the Buccaneers need to lose to the New Orleans Saints. Both Week 18 games are scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

— Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s first career touchdown pass was a 13-yard pass to tight end Kyle Pitts on fourth down to tie the game up with 1:23 left in the game.

— Sunday marked the first time in NFL history that two first-round rookie quarterbacks started in the same prime-time game. Penix was the No. 8 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, while Daniels was the No. 2 pick.

— Falcons safety Jessie Bates III and inside linebacker JD Bertrand both recorded their first career sacks against the Commanders. Bates has started all 112 games in which he has appeared since joining the NFL in 2018. Bertrand is a rookie who has appeared in 12 games this season without a start.

— Washington has won 11 games for the first time since 1991. That season, the then-Redskins finished 14-2 and won the 1992 Super Bowl against the Buffalo Bills.

— Sunday was the Falcons' second overtime game in 2024. The Falcons beat the Buccaneers in overtime in Week 5. The last time Atlanta had two games go into overtime during the regular season was 2015, when the Falcons reversed their results against the same two teams. The Falcons beat Washington in Week 5 and lost to Tampa Bay in Week 8.

QUOTING RAHEEM MORRIS

On whether he debated going for the 2-point conversion when the Falcons scored at the end of the game...

"No, the thought was to get the ball back, like we did. Try to get the ball back and go down with the ball pretty quickly down the field. Set us up for a game-winning field goal. We set up for a game-winning field goal, probably a little bit out of our range. Was desperation range and went out there and took a shot at it. The young man (kicker Riley Patterson) struck it good, hit it good. Just came up short. But that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. That's how it goes."

QUOTING THE FALCONS

Quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

On how he assessed his performance overall...

"I got to be better with the ball. I dropped the ball twice (against the Commanders). That's unlike me. I never really did that much in my career, so just protecting the ball because if we don't fall on it, those are big game-changing plays, and the game could've been very lopsided."

Right guard Chris Lindstrom

On needing the Saints to beat the Buccaneers for even a chance at the playoffs...

"Yeah, brutal. But I hope those guys win."

QUOTING THE OPPONENT

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn

On his overall assessment of the game...

"I give Rah and his team a lot of credit. This is a tough crew. I knew their backs were against the wall as well, and we knew this was gonna be a fight that goes all the way to the end. We talked about a five-quarter mindset — and sure enough, we had it."

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels

On the game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz...

"Man coverage. I knew they were going to keep eyes on Terry, and I knew Zach had a 1-on-1. We repped that so many times, I knew he was going to win on that, he was going to make the catch and it was going to be game over."
