Falcons promote T.J. Yates, D.J. Williams on offensive coaching staff

Yates is now the Falcons’ pass game coordinator, while Williams is the new quarterbacks coach.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons made two internal promotions on their offensive coaching staff, the team announced Thursday.

T.J. Yates was elevated from quarterbacks coach to pass game coordinator. D.J. Williams, who was previously an offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach last season, is now the full-time quarterbacks coach. They'll both continue to serve under offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.

The Falcons' 2024 quarterback room included veteran Kirk Cousins and rookie Michael Penix Jr. Cousins started all 14 games in which he appeared, completing 66.9% of his passes for an average of 250.6 yards per game. He threw 19 touchdowns, but he also threw a league-high 16 interceptions. Penix, meanwhile, completed 58% of his passes and averaged 246 yards per game in his three starts to end the year. He threw three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Cousins and Penix's combined work helped the Falcons become the No. 5 passing offense with 4,068 yards overall. They finished the year ranked No. 20 in touchdowns and No. 29 in interceptions.

Yates, a former NFL quarterback himself, has been in Atlanta since 2021. He started as a passing game specialist and coached wide receivers in 2022-23 before focusing solely on quarterbacks last season.

Before joining the Falcons, Yates was the Houston Texans' assistant quarterback coach from 2019-20.

Williams, meanwhile, was new to Atlanta last season. He previously spent the 2019-23 seasons as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints.

Williams didn't play in the NFL, but was a quarterback at Grambling State University. He is the son of Washington Commanders executive Doug Williams, who won Super Bowl XXII, making him the first Black quarterback in NFL history to both start and win a Super Bowl.
