The Mailbox: Answering your NFL Scouting Combine questions

Tori McElhaney dives into your inquiries.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — It's been a quiet couple of weeks in Atlanta, which I am not particularly complaining about. Your girl needed a break!

But that break is about to hit the breaks because the NFL Combine is right around the corner. Literally. A group of us leaves Monday afternoon and we will be on Radio Row for a few days getting the lowdown on the state of the Falcons from Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris as well as national media and their perspective of the organization at this point in time.

Because of this, it only makes sense that this pre-combine Mailbox is about just that... the combine. So, let's get into your combine-related questions.

@tori_mcelhaney what is the combine schedule like this year? Don't general managers and head coaches talk at some point?

Tori: Hey John, yes. They do. General managers and head coaches will speak to the media at the podiums in Indianapolis on Tuesday before the interviews and workouts with prospects begin.

As I made mention to in the lede, Will McFadden and I will also be on Radio Row to get some extra time with both Fontenot and Morris to ask more specific questions than they may get at the podium. You will be able to catch both of those conversations from the podium and on Radio Row on the Atlanta Falcons Youtube channel, podcast network as well as written content from the editorial team throughout.

As for the player prospect schedule, I have listed the on-field workout timing out for you below:

Thursday, Feb. 27 (3 p.m. ET): Defensive linemen, defensive ends and linebackers

Friday, Feb. 28 (3 p.m. ET): Defensive backs and tight ends

Saturday, March 1 (1 p.m. ET): Quarterback, wide receivers and running backs

Sunday, March 2 (1 p.m. ET): Offensive linemen

All on-field workouts will be broadcasted live on NFL Network, and personally, I will be paying close attention to Thursday and Friday's workouts.

Hi Tori! I know the Combine is coming up and while I always have it on in the background while I am doing stuff during the day, I don't really get why its important. Like, isn't everything they do things scouts have already seen/what they would test at a pro day? I just don't get why its such a major part of the process when it feels redundant. Thanks for answering my question!

Tori: So glad you wrote in, Sarah, because this is a good question. The most important parts of the NFL Combine — in my opinion — are always the conversations and moments that you don't see on the broadcast. Are the on-field workouts and testings good for TV? Of course. But to your point, it's not something decision-makers and evaluators for teams haven't seen already (or won't see later on in the process, whether it be at a pro day or private workout).

A major part of the combine process is the medical evaluations that happen behind closed doors. It is an opportunity for the team doctors and trainers to get real-time assessments of players the team is interested in, just to make sure everything is up-to-date and checks out. Raheem Morris told me last year during our chat on Radio Row that the medical evaluations will either get you really pumped about a prospect, or they will break your heart. It's the first time those type of inquiries and findings are able to be made. And they are important, because you're investing in a player, so you want to assure that investment is as sound as possible.

Also, one more note on the combine and the things you don't see: Literally everyone and their brother is in Indianapolis this week. I am talking coaches, front office personnel, agents and media members. It's a huge opportunity for networking across the league's biggest movers and shakers. My friend Kris Rhim wrote this piece a couple years ago on the famous St. Elmo's steakhouse, and how it has become a hub for some of the NFL's most important conversations.

I say all of this to ultimately say this: When it comes to the combine, what happens off the field is way more important than what happens on.
