FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier had the third-best rushing output of his career during Sunday's 38-20 victory against the Carolina Panthers, gaining 105 yards with a touchdown on 18 carries. He also reached a very important milestone.
With a 3-yard carry in the fourth quarter, Allgeier surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards in his 39th NFL game. That is tied for the third-fewest number of games it has taken a Falcons player to reach 2,000 career rushing yards, and Allgeier shares that spot with none other than Michael Vick.
The Falcons' former star quarterback finished his 39th game with 2,030 rushing yards and continued to establish himself as the pinnacle of dual-threat quarterback play to that point in NFL history. Vick ultimately gained 3,859 rushing yards during his time in Atlanta from 2001-06, and he finished his career with 6,109 yards on the ground. Vick's career average of seven yards per carry is currently the all-time NFL record.
This isn't the first time Allgeier, a former fifth-round pick, has placed himself in the Falcons' record books. During the 2022 season, Allgeier finished with 1,035 rushing yards and broke William Andrews' longstanding franchise record for most yards on the ground by a Falcons rookie.
"Tyler was a pain in my neck his rookie season," Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said, who was with the Los Angeles Rams at the time. "Being a defensive coordinator against him (and) trying to figure out who he was. ... Cordarrelle Patterson was the back and (Allgeier) was the other. I remember telling our guys in our meeting, 'These guys run hard.' I said, 'I'm just telling you.'
"And if I recall right, I think it was (Rams defensive tackle) Greg Gaines that came out in the first drive and goes, 'Man, you wasn't lying. This dude is heavy.' So, we've kind of known him for a while."
One of the greatest players in franchise history, Andrews was an absolute force early in his NFL career. He gained at least 1,000 yards from scrimmage in each of his first five seasons, including a league-leading 2,036 yards during the 1981 season. Unfortunately, Williams' career was derailed by injuries, but he still amassed 8,633 total yards in just six seasons.
It's no surprise then that Andrews reached 2,000 rushing yards in only 28 games, which remains the fastest pace ever set by a Falcons player. Second on that list is Gerald Riggs, who surpassed 2,000 yards in his 36th career game.
That leaves Vick and Allgeier tied for third. The two are very different players in many ways, but Allgeier has quickly become a fan-favorite player for his reliability and humble work ethic. And when the Falcons wanted to cement their victory in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game, they turned to Allgeier, as they often do.
It was a simple run to the right with just under four minutes remaining that secured Allgeier yet another place in Falcons history, but that somehow seems to be a fitting way for the third-year back to earn his spot.
