For the 2024 NFL season, digital team reporter Terrin Waack will provide stellar stats, obscure facts and notable quotes from the most recent game to show how the Atlanta Falcons are staying on track each week.
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons lost 18-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in their Week 1 opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday in front of 72,291 ticketed fans.
STELLAR STATS
— Steelers kicker Chris Boswell went 6-for-6 on field goals from distances of 57, 51, 44, 56, 40 and 25 yards in order. It marked the third time in his 10-year career that he attempted and made six field goals. He previously went 6-for-6 in a 24-20 Week 15 win against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016, and he then made all six of his attempts on Jan. 15, 2017 in an 18-16 playoff win against the Kansas City Chiefs.
— Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett broke a franchise record Sunday with his three quarterback hits. He now has 117 in his career and surpassed former Falcons defensive end John Abraham, who held the No. 1 spot with 115. Abraham played for Atlanta from 2006-14 and recorded 68.5 sacks, which currently rank No. 2 in franchise history behind former Falcons defensive end Claude Humphrey. Abraham reached his totals in seven seasons. Jarrett is in his 10th.
— Falcons running back Bijan Robinson had 23 touches — 18 carries and five receptions. The Falcons ran 50 total offensive plays, which means Robinson was responsible for nearly half of their action — 46% to be exact. His 111 yards made up 49% of the Falcons' 226 total yards.
— Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remains undefeated against the Falcons, improving to 5-0.
— This is more skewed than stellar: The Falcons had 175 net yards offensively in the first half. That means they had 51 in the second half, which is only 23% of their total.
OBSCURE FACTS
— Despite their 18 points, the Steelers never made it into the end zone. All their points came from Boswell's field goals. Therefore, Sunday marked the 52nd time in franchise history the Falcons didn't allow a single touchdown in a game. They’re now 47-5 in those cases. The most recent was Week 15 of 2023 when the Falcons lost 9-7 to the Carolina Panthers.
— According to the game book, Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins was sacked only once by linebacker T.J. Watt. That number may seem low because two were negated by penalties. In the second quarter, Watt's sack was canceled because he was offsides. Then, in the third quarter, another Watt sack was canned because cornerback Donte Jackson was called for illegal use of hands.
— The Falcons and Steelers combined for 14 penalties for 94 yards. Pittsburgh carried the majority of the weight with nine penalties for 60 yards. It was the 71st time in team history the Steelers hit nine on the nose, going 45-26 in those games.
— Cousins' 155 yards passing signified his second-lowest total in a season opener since becoming a full-time starter in 2015. His lowest is still 98 yards passing in 2019 when he led the Minnesota Vikings to a 28-12 victory over the Falcons also in Week 1.
— Starting wide receivers Drake London and Darnell Mooney had three combined receptions for 30 yards. Slot receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III had four receptions for 52 yards, alone.
QUOTING RAHEEM MORRIS
On whether the offense should have been more balance with who got the ball…
"I like winning, and that wasn't the result we got today. So, we've to go back to the lab and figure out a way to win. And whatever that is, we'll do."
QUOTING THE FALCONS
Right guard Chris Lindstrom
On having to briefly leave the game due to injury in the second quarter…
"I thank the independent medical team and those guys. I got hit in the back of the head and just grabbed my helmet for a second, and I'm glad those guys inspected me. I was totally fine. I think it's just a testament to the way the NFL is taking care of guys now, and I'm glad they are doing stuff like that."
Outside linebacker Matthew Judon
On whether he is worried about bouncing back...
"You don't fold when you face adversity. You run to it. That's what we're going to do."
QUOTING THE OPPONENT
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin
On decision to go for a touchdown rather than field goal on fourth-and-1 in fourth quarter…
"We're going to live that life. We don't live in our fears. We play, and we play to win. If you can't get fourth-and-1, sometimes you don't deserve to win. That's just a philosophical approach that we live by. … Obviously, we didn't get it done right there, but we still live that life."
On his message to Falcons head coach Raheem Morris...
"Man, you know, this is what we do, but that's my little brother. I'm proud of him, and I wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
