The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have released defensive end John Abraham, cornerback Dunta Robinson, and running back Michael Turner.
"As a football coach it is never easy to cut any player, especially veteran players who have been valuable members of the organization," Falcons head coach Mike Smith said. "The guys we released today have contributed to the success that we have had over the last five years, and we greatly appreciate their efforts."
Abraham, 6-4, 263 pounds, was originally selected by the New York Jets (13th overall) in the 2000 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2006. Abraham totaled 68.5 sacks in his seven seasons with the Falcons. He ranks second on the team's all-time sacks list and is the NFL's active sack leader.
Robinson, 5-10, 183 pounds, was originally selected by the Houston Texans in the first round (10th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 6, 2010. Robinson played in 47 games during his three seasons in Atlanta, totaling 214 tackles (183 solo), four interceptions, 1.5 sacks, and 24 passes defensed.
Turner, 5-10, 247 pounds, was originally selected by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round (154th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 2, 2008. Turner totaled 6,081 rushing yards on 1,411 carries (4.3 yards per carry) with a franchise record 60 rushing touchdowns in his five seasons with the club.
