Falcons officially rule Matt Ryan out, sign Danny Etling to active roster

Matt Ryan

The Atlanta Falcons announced Saturday that quarterback Matt Ryan, who was officially listed as questionable against the Seahawks after practicing in a limited fashion on Friday, has been ruled out for their upcoming game.

Ryan suffered an ankle injury in the team's loss to the Los Angeles Rams and will miss his first start since the 2009 season, breaking one of the longest active starting streaks in the NFL. In addition to announcing Ryan's new status for Sunday's game, the team has also signed quarterback Danny Etling off of the practice squad and onto the active roster; the Falcons released offensive lineman John Wetzel in a corresponding move.

Etling was signed by the Falcons during the preseason after Kurt Benkert sustained an injury in the Hall of Fame Game. Etling completed 17 of his 31 pass attempts in the preseason for 193 yards and one touchdown. The Falcons will start former Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Schaub on Sunday against the Seahawks, and Etling will serve as his primary backup.
