FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday that they are placing second-year quarterback Kurt Benkert on injury reserve and, in a corresponding move, have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Tommy Doles.

Doles, 23, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears this spring. A three-year starter at right guard for Northwestern, Doles played in 39 games from 2016-18. Doles, who is 6-foot-4 and 296 pounds, was a senior captain for Northwestern last season, and he was named a third-team All-Big Ten player as a junior.

Benkert, 24, sustained a toe injury during Atlanta's preseason opener that forced him to leave the game. While addressing the media on Sunday, coach Dan Quinn said the injury "will knock him out for a while" In response to Benkert's injury, the Falcons signed quarterback Matt Sims, who was with the team from 2015-17.
