Falcons feiern fulminantes Comeback gegen Packers

ATLANTA - Die Falcons haben im Mercedes-Benz Stadion gegen die Green Bay Packers einen weiteren Heimsieg eingefahren und im vierten Quarter ein furioses Comeback gefeiert.

"Wenn man die Atlanta Falcons da draußen sieht, werden wir uns nie unterkriegen lassen. Wir werden kämpfen, bis die Uhr abgelaufen ist," schwärmte Comeback-Quarterback Desmond Ridder über den Kampfgeist seiner Mannschaft.

Head Coach Arthur Smith lobte die lautstarken Falcons-Fans für ihre Unterstützung, besonders in der Schlussphase: "Es bedeutet uns sehr viel, zu Hause zu gewinnen - wir konnten die Fans wirklich spüren. Ihre Energie hat den Unterschied ausgemacht, und bei diesem letzten Drive im Spiel haben sie uns wirklich vorangetrieben."

ERSTES QUARTER - RARITÄT FÜR RIDDER

Die Falcons begannen gleich im ersten Spielzug ungünstig, als eine Pass-Interference von A. J. Terrell zu einer 44-Yard-Strafe führte. Glücklicherweise wurde Green Bay (GB) nach einer soliden Defense der Falcons zum Punt gezwungen.

Desmond Ridder bekam endlich das schreckliche Feeling für einen Quarterback zu spüren. Im sechsten Spiel seiner noch jungen NFL-Karriere warf Ridder nach 134 Passversuchen seine allererste Interception, die von Rasul Douglas abgefangen wurde.

Die Falcons begannen dann, in Fahrt zu kommen. Doch trotz eines beeindruckenden Drives mit 15 Spielzügen – drei davon an der GB-1-Yard-Linie – konnten die frustrierten Falcons nur ein Field Goal aus kurzer Distanz von Younghoe Koo zur Führung erzielen.

ZWEITES QUARTER – PACKERS PROGRESS

Im zweiten Quarter kamen die Packers früh in Schwung und übernahmen die Führung dank eines 84-Yard-Touchdown-Drives über 11 Spielzüge, der von Jayden Reed abgeschlossen wurde. Die Packers waren voller Tatendrang und bauten ihre Führung durch ein 33-Yard-Field-Goal von Anders Carlson aus.

Kurz vor der Halbzeit drehten die Falcons mit einem 11 Spielzüge und 75 Yards langen Drive auf, um den Rückstand zu verringern. Drake London fing einen kurzen Touchdown-Pass von Ridder aus 3 Yards Entfernung ab, und es passt, dass London gerade rechtzeitig für die prestigeträchtige Reise der Falcons in die englische Hauptstadt und das historische Wembley-Stadion in zwei Wochen in Form kommt. Kicker Koo verfehlte jedoch den Extrapunkt und hinterließ bei den Falcons zur Halbzeit einen bitteren Beigeschmack.

DRITTES QUARTER – FALCONS FRUSTRIERT

Mit dem Ball in der Hand begann Atlanta das dritte Viertel in ähnlicher Weise wie zum Beginn des Spiels. Langsam….

Ridder konnte sich glücklich schätzen, dass er nach einem schlampigen Pass nicht erneut abgefangen wurde. Die Bemühungen der Falcons liefen ins Leere und die Packers nutzten dies prompt aus.

Rookie Dontayvion Wicks konnte mit einem 32-Yard-Touchdown-Pass die GB-Führung ausbauen.

Eine wesentliche Entscheidung fiel gegen die Falcons, die das Spiel der Heimmannschaft hätte zerstören können, als Mack Hollins athletischer Fang auf den Zehenspitzen in der Endzone nach einer längeren Überprüfung als Out of Bounds gewertet wurde. Ein Field Goal von Koo verkürzte den Rückstand drei Minuten vor Ende des Quarters auf 12:17.

Die Falcons waren im nächsten Drive frustriert, als eine weitere Pass-Interference gegen sie gewertet wurde, und Reed bestrafte sie erneut mit seinem zweiten Touchdown.

Ende 3. Quarter: 12:24

VIERTES QUARTER – WOW! CLUTCH COMEBACK!

Beim Stand von 12:24 sah es für die Falcons zu Beginn des letzten Quarters düster aus.

Doch ein aufgeregter Hollins ließ die knappe Entscheidung, die ihm einen Touchdown verwehrt hatte, hinter sich und fing einen 45-Yard-Pass von Ridder ab.

Der QB der Falcons nutzte diesen Schwung, um sechs Yards in die Endzone zu rennen und einen wertvollen Touchdown zu erzielen. Genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt, um den Falcons beim Stand von 19:24 neue Hoffnung zu geben.

Coach Smith zollte seinem Quarterback in der Pressekonferenz nach dem Spiel Anerkennung: "Ich fand, es war ein ziemlich effizienter Tag. Er ist ein Gewinner, die Jungs glauben an ihn. Man kann es sehen. In diesen kritischen Situationen ist er in Höchstform. Die Jungs lieben ihn."

Die Falcons brauchten eine starke Defense, um die Packers zum ersten Mal seit dem ersten Viertel zum Punt zu zwingen. Ein 33-Yard-Field-Goal von Koo verkürzte den Rückstand auf nur noch zwei Punkte.

Jetzt ging es heiß her. GB Quarterback Jordan Love setzte sich ins Abseits und erzwang einen weiteren Punt der Packers. London war wieder am Zug und fing einen weiteren 24-Yard-Pass. Die Falcons waren wie verwandelt. Das Momentum war voll da.

Kurz vor dem Two-Minute-Warning sorgte Coach Smith mit einer mutigen Entscheidung bei 4th and Inches und einem Lauf von Bijan Robinson für ein wichtiges First Down.

"Du kommst in diese kritischen Situationen, bei diesen Fourth Downs, und unsere Jungs bleiben am Ball. Unsere Jungs haben so viel gutes Situations-Football in der Schlussphase gespielt", sagte Smith.

Bei einem weiteren 4th and 1 nahm Smith eine Auszeit, um zu überlegen, und schickte schließlich Koo für ein 25-Yard-Field-Goal. Der Südkoreaner war eiskalt und erzielte sein 10. Field Goal in Folge, das einen Ausgleich oder einer Führung brachte.

"Younghoe hat schon viele wichtige Tore für uns geschossen. Koo ist so unglaublich treffsicher wie kaum ein anderer in dieser Liga", meinte Smith.

Die Falcons hatten das Spiel in der Schlussphase gedreht und in vier aufeinanderfolgenden Spielzügen mit einem TD und 3 Field Goals gepunktet. 13 unbeantwortete Punkte. Spielstand 25:24 und noch 57 Sekunden auf der Uhr. Green Bay ohne Timeouts. Ein Drama.
