Am vergangenen Sonntag mussten die Atlanta Falcons die nunmehr vierte Niederlage in Folge einstecken. Doch diese schmerzt das Team und die Fans besonders. Nicht nur das bittere Endergebnis von 42:21 für die Minnesota Vikings sorgt für Unmut, auch die Tatsache, dass die Tampa Bay Buccaneers mit ihrem Sieg gegen die Las Vegas Raiders mit einer Bilanz von nunmehr 7-6 die Tabellenführung der NFC South übernommen haben, spricht eine klare Sprache. Mit der vierten Niederlage in vier Spielen fallen die Falcons unter die 0.500-Marke und müssen aktuell tatsächlich um einen Einzug in die Playoffs bangen.

Die Falcons hatten drei Turnover - einen Fumble und zwei Interceptions - alle zum jeweils ungünstigsten Zeitpunkt. Die erste Interception erfolgte bei Gleichstand und verhinderte, dass die Falcons die Führung wieder an sich reißen konnten. Der Fumble führte zu einem Touchdown der Vikings, der die Heimmannschaft mit zwei Punkten in Führung brachte. Der zweite Pick führte zu einem weiteren Touchdown der Vikings. Minnesota erzielte so insgesamt 14 Punkte durch drei Turnover der Falcons.

Zu Beginn des letzten Viertels gelang den Vikings mit einem 11-Yard-Touchdown-Pass von Quarterback Sam Darnold auf Wide Receiver Justin Jefferson die erneute Übernahme der Führung zum 28:21. Beim anschließenden Kickoff fumbelte Wide Receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III den Ball nach einem 31-Yard-Return. Vikings-Linebacker Brian Asamoah II wurde der Fumble gutgeschrieben, Fullback C.J. Ham trug den Ball zurück an Atlantas 32-Yard-Linie. Die Offense der Vikings war daraufhin wieder auf dem Feld und legte einen sieben Spielzüge langen Scoring Drive hin. Darnold schloss den Drive mit einen 6-Yard-Touchdown-Pass zu Wide Receiver Jordan Addison ab und brachte die Vikings weiter in Führung. Natürlich bekamen die Falcons dann eine weitere Chance, den Vorsprung der Vikings zumindest zu verringern. Doch Cousins warf eine weitere Interception, die Atlantas Chance auf ein Comeback zunichte machte.
Herausragende Leistung: Die Defense der Falcons erzielte vier Sacks gegen Vikings-Quarterback Sam Darnold und bewies damit, dass sie an ihre Leistung von fünf Sacks bei der Niederlage gegen die Los Angeles Chargers in der vergangenen Woche anknüpfen kann. Die Anzahl der Sacks am Sonntag kam von Inside Linebacker Kaden Elliss, Defensive Lineman Eddie Goldman, Outside Linebacker Matthew Judon und Arnold Ebiketie. Die Falcons zeigen damit, dass sie auf Seiten der Defensive die Bye Week in Woche 12 wirklich genutzt haben, um sich selbst zu reflektieren und diesen Bereich ihrer Defensivleistung erheblich zu verbessern.
Zahl, die man kennen sollte: 0. Die Anzahl der Touchdown-Pässe, die Kirk Cousins im Spiel gegen die Vikings für sich verbuchen konnte. Und das, obwohl die Zahlen auf dem Papier eigentlich für die Offense sprechen: Denn Die Falcons hatten insgesamt 496 Yards Total Offense, davon 158 Rushing Yards und 338 Passing Yards. In dem vierten Spiel mit über 400 Yards Total Offense in dieser Saison gelang des Cousins trotzdem nicht, die Endzone aus der Luft zu erreichen. Damit verlängert sich seine Durststrecke auf vier Spiele in Folge ohne einen Touchdown-Pass. Stattdessen warf der Signal Caller zwei Interceptions, womit er in den letzten vier Spielen acht Picks verbuchen konnte.
Fazit: Die Falcons stehen nun bei einer Bilanz von 6-7. Um wieder eine Chance auf die Playoffs zu haben, müssen sie dringend an ihren Offensivleistungen arbeiten und an Spiele wie die gegen die Eagles oder Buccaneers anknüpfen.
In Woche 15 reisen die Falcons zu den Las Vegas Raiders ins Allegiant Stadium und müssen im Monday-Night-Game (17. Dezember 2024, 2:30 Uhr CET) beweisen, dass noch Potential für einen erfolgreichen Saisonabschluss in ihnen steckt.
