Falcons verlieren erstes Auswärtsspiel gegen die Detroit Lions

DETROIT – Die Atlanta Falcons verloren ihr erstes Spiel in dieser Saison und kassierten eine herbe 20:6 Niederlage gegen die dominanten Detroit Lions.

Die Falcons erzielten mit 20 Carries nur 44 Yards – das erste Mal seit Woche 2 der letzten Saison, dass sie die 100-Yard-Marke nicht überschreiten konnten und der niedrigste Wert seit November 2021.

Head Coach Arthur Smith tat sein Bestes, die schwache Offensive der Falcons zu erklären: "Wir hatten zu viele negative Plays bei frühen Downs. Wir müssen es einfach besser machen, wir haben einige harte Lektionen zu lernen."

Vor allem Quarterback Desmond Ridder erlebte einen denkbar schlechten Abend, als er von einer überragenden Detroiter Defense sage und schreibe sieben Sacks erhielt.

Auch er versuchte, seinen harten Arbeitstag zu erklären: "Es wird nie vorkommen, dass uns ein anderes Team schlägt, sondern wir schlagen uns selbst. In unserer Situation gibt es viele Schlüsselmomente, in denen wir uns selbst schlagen und nicht unser volles Potenzial ausschöpfen", sagte ein perplexer Ridder.

2. QUARTER – Lions erobern die Führung

Ridder begann, seine Passwege zu finden und Younghoe Koo glich mit einem souveränen 48-Yard Field Goal zum 3:3 aus.

Doch Jared Goff fand kurz darauf Sam LaPorta für einen 45-Yard-Touchdown, der die Führung für die Lions auf 10:3 zurückeroberte. Goff fing an, seine Ziele mit wachsender Sicherheit zu treffen, und die Falcons taten gut daran, die brüllenden Lions auf ein weiteres Field Goal aus kurzer Distanz zu beschränken.

Alles in allem war es eine Halbzeit, die die Falcons wohl lieber vergessen wollen. Ridder wurde in der ersten Halbzeit viermal gesackt, und die Falcons hatten angesichts eines 10-Punkte-Rückstands zur Pause viel Arbeit vor sich.

3. QUARTER – Falcons weiterhin frustriert

Das dritte Viertel verlief für beide Mannschaften punktlos, da die Defenses dominierten. Wichtige Pässe wurden nicht gefangen und Koo verpasste nach einem guten Drive einen 47-Yard Field Goal Versuch. Insgesamt hatten die Falcons sieben aufeinanderfolgende 3rd Downs, die sie nicht verwerten konnten, was äußerst demoralisierend war.

Als die Zeit im dritten Viertel ablief, fing Jessie Bates III einen Pass von Goff an der Mittellinie ab und gab den Falcons neue Hoffnung – Bates' dritte INT in dieser Saison.

4. QUARTER – Lions brüllen zum Sieg

Doch Desmond Ridder konnte die beste Feldposition des Tages nicht nutzen, und die Lions machten keinen Fehler, als sie nach einem erfolglosen 4th and 5 der Falcons den Ball übernahmen. Goff lief aus drei Yards in die Endzone (sein erster Rushing-TD als Lion) und baute die Führung der Gastgeber auf ein beeindruckendes 20:3 aus.

Auch die Zeit machte den Falcons zu schaffen, da Ridder weiterhin unter dem Druck der beeindruckenden Detroiter Verteidigung stand.

Erst 5:30 vor Spielende gelang es den Falcons zum ersten Mal, die Redzone zu erreichen, doch sie mussten sich mit einem Field Goal von Younghoe Koo begnügen.

Die Lions hatten das Spiel fest im Griff und ließen die Uhr weiterlaufen. Im letzten nennenswerten Play wurde Ridder zum siebten und letzten Mal gesackt und beendete damit einen bitteren Abend für die deutlich geschlagenen Falcons.

Nach der Niederlage in Detroit reisen die Falcons mit einer Saisonbilanz von 2:1 nach London, wo sie auf die Jacksonville Jaguars treffen
